Callback verification card

The rule is simple enough that nobody needs to be taught it. The difficulty is remembering it while someone you love appears to be in trouble. So put it on the wall.

Fill in your own numbers

Everything you type stays in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is saved, and closing the tab clears it — so print the card once it says what you want.

Before you act on that call Hang up. Call back on a number you already have. For this household
  1. A voice is not identification. A convincing copy of someone’s voice can be made from about a minute of ordinary speech. Sounding right proves nothing.
  2. Urgency is the attack. “There is no time”, “don’t tell anyone” and “stay on the line” are the three sentences the whole thing depends on.
  3. End the call yourself. Then dial a number from the list below, or one already stored in your phone. Never a number the caller gave you, and never one from the caller ID.
  4. Ask for the phrase. Anyone claiming an emergency should be able to say the agreed phrase. It is not written on this card and never should be.
  5. Money waits. No payment, transfer, gift card, code or account detail moves until someone has been reached on a known number.
  6. If it was a scam, say so out loud. Tell the person whose voice was used, and tell the bank. Nobody in this house or team gets blamed for following this card.

The safe word is not on this card. It lives in people’s heads, agreed face to face, never sent by message and never stored in a phone. If someone cannot produce it, that is your answer.

Where to put it

Somewhere a phone gets answered under pressure. By a landline, on a fridge, taped inside a cupboard door, pinned above a finance team’s desks. A rule that is visible at the moment of the call works. The same rule in a folder does not, because nobody consults a folder while a relative is crying down the phone.

For a workplace, pair it with something written and signed off, so that verifying is a requirement rather than an individual’s decision to doubt a senior voice. There is a policy template here. At home, pair it with a phrase agreed in person. Generate one here.

Why the callback and not the ear

Trying to hear whether a voice is synthetic keeps you on the call, deliberating, which is exactly the position the call was engineered to create. A callback ends the conversation and moves it to a channel the caller does not control. It costs a minute, it never gets less effective as the technology improves, and it does not require anyone to be an expert. The longer argument for this is here.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is what I type here stored?

No. The fields update the card in the page and nothing else. No network requests, no browser storage. Print it if you want to keep it.

Can I leave a contact row blank?

Yes. Empty rows are simply left out of the printed card.

Should I include the bank’s phone number?

Better not to write one down. Use the number printed on the card in your wallet or inside the official app — those cannot be substituted by a caller, and a number copied onto a wall can be.
